Effective Website Design ?C Colours & Fonts

Author: S. Jax

So you have sorted out your web space and you have a catchy name with a memorable tagline. So now your thoughts should turn to website design. You don't need a design degree to develop a high performing and stylish website. There are some simple rules of thumb to follow that will appeal to your readership on a subconscious level, which in turn will make your website a high achieving advertising tool.

Different colours give off different subliminal messages. Take time to choose the colour of your website and the colours of the fonts used within the website to create the right feeling and mood for your subject matter and your target audience.

Red is associated with love, passion, danger, warning, excitement, food, impulse, action, adventure.
Blue is associated with trustworthiness, success, seriousness, calmness, power, professionalism.
Green is associated with money, nature, animals, health, healing, life, and harmony.
Orange is associated with comfort, creativity, celebration, fun, youth, affordability.
Purple is associated with royalty, justice, ambiguity, uncertainty, luxury, fantasy, dreams.
White is associated with innocence, purity, cleanliness, simplicity.
Yellow is associated with curiosity, playfulness, cheerfulness, amusement.
Pink is associated with softness, sweetness, innocence, youthfulness, tenderness.
Brown is associated with earth, nature, tribal, primitive, and simplicity.
Grey is associated with neutral, indifference, reserved.
Black is associated with seriousness, darkness, mystery, secrecy.

In a similar way font types also carry hidden meanings.
Rounded curly fonts - Suggest fun, youth, non serious and non threatening
Bold fonts suggest - Urgency, directness,
Handwriting fonts suggest - Personal, intimacy
Old style fonts suggest - Traditional, orthodox, righteous, seriousness
Have a look through some fonts and read the hidden subliminal messages that they are conveying to you. Use them to write different captions such as

The old lady passed a way in her sleep alone.

Notice how the font appears to alter the meaning of the text. Take care when you consider the colour and the font types when you are designing your website.

You should consider colours and fonts carefully when designing your website. They can have a profound effect on you target audience and may alter the meaning of your website and alter the course of your success.
